The Bruins announced late Sunday that they have acquired defenseman Mike Reilly from the Ottawa Senators for a third-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft.

Reilly, 27, should add some breakout skill and puck-handling to a team that’s currently missing Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk. In 244 career NHL games with Ottawa, Montreal and Minnesota, totaling eight goals and 64 assists for 72 points. He had 19 assists in 40 games for the Senators this season. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound defenseman was originally selected in the fourth round 98th overall) of the 2011 draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He carries a $1.5 million cap hit and will be a free agent after the season.

The Bruins are expected to try to be active before Monday’s trade deadline. Picking up Reilly doesn’t lessen the likelihood that they’ll try to add more help on the blue line as well as secondary scoring upfront.
