If you’re not an experienced grower or consumer, it may be difficult to spot mold on your buds. Mold can sometimes be mistaken for trichomes, the tiny crystal-like outgrowths which gives cannabis its distinct scent. Mold has a grey or white powdery appearance, while trichomes look like little hairs that sparkle. It also has a musky smell… a lot like a basement that flooded and was never properly cleaned. A few other signs your weed may be mold infested include:

  • Discoloured leaves
  • Shriveled leaves and stems
  • Glows under black light
  • Damp flowers
  • Causes chest pain when inhaling

Unfortunately, cannabis can become infected with various types of molds and mildews if you’re not cautious.

So, is it dangerous to smoke? It very well could be. Some types of mold, such as aspergillus, can affect the lungs, heart, brain and kidneys.

In 2011, there were two case studies done on medical cannabis consumers who developed a condition called chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA). CPA causes ‘fungal balls’ to develop in the lungs, which often require surgery to remove. The UC Davis study found the fungi aspergillus on cannabis that was bought from dispensaries and growers in Northern California.

A complication of CPA includes haemoptysis, meaning bleeding from the lungs.

The case suggests this fungus could in fact infect a person by simply being handled, rather than being smoked. For those with a healthy immune system, very small amounts of mold will have little to no effect on their health. However, for cancer patients and those with a compromised immune system, these molds can be fatal as documented in the UC Davis study.

Here’s some tips we’ve put together on how to protect your buds from growing mold and ensure your safety. Note: proper storage is everything!

Keep your Cannabis in a dry, Dark Space

Keeping your cannabis in a cabinet or drawer, away from direct sunlight will prevent your weed becoming heated and holding in moisture which causes mold growth. High temperatures will also dry out your flower, resulting in lost potency, aroma and flavour.

Airtight Container

Glass jars are among the most popular ways to store cannabis. Its airtight lid keeps out excess moisture, preventing mold growth and keeping your cannabis as potent as possible.

Control Humidity

Investing in humidity control packets are recommended, as they ensure your marijuana is being stored with right amount of moisture. Humidity should be kept around 59 to 63 percent. Going any higher risks trapping moisture and growing mold.

If you do find yourself with moldy cannabis, bring it back to the supplier. Or, like you would with moldy food, just throw it away.
