The Leafythings team was busy setting up for our official launch party for leafythings.com in Kingston Ontario.

It was warm for a Thursday morning in February. The sun was shining and everyones spirits were high (no pun intended- we had way too much to get done to spark before noon).

We couldn’t not be in a good mood. We knew Tommy Chong was on his way to meet us.

Tommy Chong is our Leafythings brand ambassador. Being one of the most well known cannabis enthusiasts and promoters in the world, it was a no-brainer that Tommy was the perfect figure to represent our brand.

Tommy’s busier than most 81 year olds- traveling from city to city, attending marijuana parties, advocating its benefits- all with the sincere intention of breaking the stigma.

With Tommy on the way, I couldn’t help but feel a tad nervous. I mean, he’s a straight-up celebrity.

Most known for his iconic character, Chong, in Cheech and Chong, which debuted in 1971. He’s also been nominated for Grammys, and had many recurring roles in TV shows, like That 70’s Show and Dancing with the Stars.

I was setting up balloons when Tommy walked in, accompanied by his son, Paris. Tommy had a huge smile on his face. My nerves instantly subsided.

Tommy came right up to me, and the first thing he asked as he shook my hand was, “Are you native?” I responded, “No….?” somehow doubting my own heritage. I was taken back. Why is Tommy Chong asking if I’m native?

Tommy said proudly, “Im native! Born in Edmonton.” He proceeded to tell me about his family, how his mother was aboriginal- his father of asian decent. He told me about his grandmother and where he went to school.

Sure Tommy's technically a celebrity, but he’s really just a genuine, down-to-earth old man with a heart of gold.

He’s the kind of guy you could talk to for hours about anything. He’s the kind of guy you feel compelled to hug.

And he’s still got it, too!

“Do you have a boyfriend?” He asked me. I grinned, responded “yes”. Tommy wanted to make sure my boyfriend was “a good guy”, and of course, wanted to know if he was native…

Gotta love his aboriginal pride.

Part of me wanted to smoke a joint with him right then and there. Smoking a joint with Tommy Chong is on every self respected stoners bucket list. But I held back, knowing there would be time to sesh with him at the party that night.

The party officially started when Tommy entered the venue. He did his meet and greets with fans on our red carpet. Some people drove for days just to meet him. He did countless interviews with news stations and eventually spoke to the entire audience on stage.

Definitely busier than the average 81 year old.

We set him up a private room so he could take breaks from the crowd at the party. For a celebrity, Tommy didn’t have much on his rider. He requested 3 things for his room: watermelon, kombucha, and water.

Tommy took care of the most important item for his room: a fish-sized bowl of perfectly rolled joints.

He passed the fish bowl around the party later in the evening, sharing the wealth. An absolutely epic moment for everyone in the room.

When Tommy went outside to light up, everyone in the room flocked behind him.

This was my moment!

Tommy was getting a CBD infused coffee at the CAFE booth outside as he lit up his perfect doobie. The crowd as thick as the smoke around them.

Out of the way everyone. I am smoking a joint with Tommy Chong if its the last thing I do!

After excessive rummaging and a few elbows to the face, I made it through the crowd to Tommy.

He smiled, put his arm around me, and passed me the joint.

I was high on more than THC. Finally, I got to smoke a joint with the man, the myth, the legend himself, Tommy Chong.
